Search intensifies in Plumas County for missing 16-year-old hiker in Lakes Basin area

QUINCY, Calif. — The search for a missing 16-year-old hiker in the Lakes Basin area continues after initial efforts to find her failed. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report Sunday evening, shortly after 6 p.m., regarding Camila “Mila” Schweyer, who was running late from a hike. Her mother reported her missing after dropping her off near Elwell Lodge in Plumas County.

A U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer confirmed where Schweyer was last seen. Plumas County Search and Rescue teams were activated and a California Highway Patrol Northern Air Operations helicopter was dispatched from Redding to assist in the search. Despite considerable efforts, crews were unable to find Schweyer overnight.

Search operations resumed Monday morning, with additional resources requested from the California Office of Emergency Services. CHP Air Operations is also returning to assist in the search.

Schweyer is described as a Hispanic female, approximately 5 feet tall, weighing approximately 110 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a dark gray sweatshirt, black leggings, blue shoes and a light blue backpack. She was hiking with a small chihuahua type dog.

The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information on Schweyer’s whereabouts to contact them at 530-283-6300. Officials expressed gratitude for the community’s support during this critical time and promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
