Rowley turns 75 in Samoa | Local news

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley turned 75 yesterday, making him the oldest serving Prime Minister in the country’s history.

Rowley spent his birthday in Samoa to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.

On Monday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. He left with Amery Browne. Browne told the Express yesterday that he was the first person to wish Rowley a happy birthday, citing the difference in time zones.

Browne said he had the “privilege of being one of the first” to accompany her to CHOGM in Samoa to wish Rowley a happy and blessed birthday.

It continues to be my privilege to serve our great nation under his leadership and direction. Reaching one’s 75th birthday in sane, healthy health is a significant milestone and an opportunity to thank God for longevity,” Browne said.

He added: “He came from the humblest of beginnings, and now I see Dr. Keith Rowley at the forefront, engaging with and being embraced by global and regional leaders as a well-known and highly appreciated colleague.

“Before we left Trinidad for this trip, I gave him a huge goldfish that I caught myself and which he liked very much, as an early birthday present. All that remains is to wish the Prime Minister continued family love, good health, good judgment and divine guidance for many more years to come. “It is quietly appreciated by many.”

A national debate is ongoing over whether Rowley will seek a third consecutive term or retire.

The general election is constitutionally required to be held in 2025. Rowley’s term as political leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM) ends in 2026.

Dr Keith Christopher Rowley was born on 24 October 1949 in Mason Hall, Tobago, and was raised by his grandparents, who were prominent farmers in Tobago.

Dr Rowley completed his secondary education at Bishop’s High School (BHS) Tobago and his excellent academic performance enabled him to win the prestigious Sylvan Bowles Scholarship at BHS.

He then began his studies at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, from where he graduated with Geology (First Class Honours), Geography (First Class Honours); MSc Volcanic Stratigraphy, UWI, St Augustine.

He is a Volcanologist with a PhD in Geology, specializing in Geochemistry.

He is a known nature lover who enjoys gardening, hiking and is an avid golfer.

On 7 September 2015, Dr Rowley became the 7th Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, leading the People’s National Movement to general election victory.
