Luis Torrens acquisition continues to pay big dividends

Being a backup catcher is never an easy task. Finding any kind of rhythm, especially on offense, can be difficult. That doesn’t apply Luis Torrenswho has excelled in that role. His at-bat has been a welcome surprise, providing the New York Mets with a spark at a time in the season when they needed it most. Torrens’ impact across the board helped the team to a crucial victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

The Mets had chances to score in the first and second innings. They blew both and came within a whisker of doing the same in the third. Pete Alonso AND Mark Vientos flew out with the bases loaded, leaving it all in the hands of Torrens. Former Met player Dennis Santana he managed to get two players to throw his slider out of the zone, but not a third. The reliever left one over center, and Torrens knocked it out, clearing the bases with a double to deep left-center field.

“I really had to focus on that rebound. Anytime I can help the team in attack or defense in any way I’m always happy to do it, especially the way I did today, I managed to get the job done,” Torrens said.

Later in the game, the catcher’s defensive influence proved effective. Trailing 5-2, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Reed Garrett He had trouble landing punches, but Torrens managed to help him out. Jack Suwinski he had two strikes against him that were low and out of the zone. The second of those would have scored, but Torrens put it perfectly. Garrett would throw out Suwinski on the next pitch, stranding three runners.

In 44 plate appearances, Torrens is slashing .317/.364/.610 (.973 OPS) with three home runs and eight RBI. He has recorded at least one hit in seven of his 11 starts and has three multi-hit games. All Torrens has done is produce.

He won the reserve job Thomas Nido and never really looked back. President of baseball operations David Stearns made a lot of good decisions to help this team compete for a wild card. Trading Torrens and then keeping him on the active roster was certainly one of them.
