Google faces South Korean antitrust action for bundling YouTube Music with premium subscription

South Korea’s antitrust commission is expected to take tough action against Google in response to allegations that the company improperly combined YouTube’s music business with its premium subscription plan, according to a news report.

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has been conducting an on-site investigation since February last year after the internet giant was accused of violating fair trading laws by making its YouTube Music streaming service available to ad-free YouTube Premium subscribers at no additional charge.

The FTC recently submitted a review report recommending criminal action against Google, according to Yonhap news agency, and will then make a decision at a scheduled plenary meeting after a months-long investigation.

According to officials, the primary focus of the investigation was whether Google abused its dominant market position by introducing the practice and whether it hindered legitimate competition in the sector. Some noted that while bundling helped boost YouTube’s subscriber base, it also limited consumer choice and unfairly hurt the profits of rival music streaming services.

“We are working to complete our investigation and other necessary procedures in July and make a final determination within weeks,” an FTC official said.
