Want to sell out your toxic boss? Some employees are actually doing it, for as little as ₹23

Young people in China are “selling” their jobs, bosses or colleagues on e-commerce platforms to “wash off the smell of work.” This term, which is used as a joke, refers to the feeling of mental and physical exhaustion after work.

Like sweat, cigarette smoke and the aroma of coffee, they now discuss the smell of a toxic boss. On Alibaba’s platform, Xianyu, people jokingly “sell” their work and colleagues to relieve work stress and get rid of the “work smell.”

A search of the South China Morning Post found more than 500 posts about Xianyu selling “annoying jobs,” “terrible bosses” and “hated colleagues.” Prices range from 2 yuan ( ₹23) and 80,000 yuan ( ₹9.2 lakh).

A seller from central China listed her work for 8,000 yuan ( ₹92,000), explaining that she was tired of getting up early in the morning. The job pays 3,000 yuan ( ₹34,000) per month.

“I’m selling a colleague who is very good at being sarcastic for 3,999 yuan. I can teach you how to deal with this colleague and offer 10 tips on how to avoid being a scapegoat at work,” SCMP quoted a Beijing-based seller as saying.

A person put his “terrible boss” up for sale for 500 yuan ( ₹5741). The employee cited personality conflicts and frequent criticism that caused him mental stress. Another salesman from Beijing offered to complete a design document that was due that night for 10 yuan ( ₹114).

Do people actually buy these “products”?

However, sellers take care to ensure that “sun” ads do not lead to actual cash transactions. If someone tries to buy the product, the seller usually cancels the transaction or refuses to buy.

“Someone paid before, but I filed for a refund and later removed the listing. This is just my way of venting, not actually buying or selling to anyone,” the seller told the publication.
