APEC Workshop in Hong Kong Focuses on Promoting Digital Solar Resources for Sustainable Energy Transition and Renewable Energy Generation

A workshop on promoting digital solar resource maps and management technologies was held today (8 July) in Hong Kong, China, under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Working Group on Energy (EWG).

Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr. Tse Chin-wan, delivering a welcome speech via video, said that Hong Kong was honored to host the APEC Workshop on Promoting Digital Solar Resource Maps and Management Technologies to Enhance Solar Energy Utilization and Support Sustainable Energy Transformation. Thirty experts and delegates from eight APEC economies gathered to exchange valuable experiences, technical knowledge and share insights on solar technologies.

Mr. Tse emphasized that the development and deployment of renewable energy, especially solar energy, is crucial to drive renewable energy generation and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. He said that under the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050, the city aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half from 2005 levels by 2035, adding that net-zero electricity generation is one of the decarbonization strategies and measures. Mr. Tse also said that digital solar resource maps and management technologies can help policymakers formulate renewable energy policies, assist trade in industrial decision-making, enable academia to develop innovative technologies and facilitate the market to create green jobs through energy transformation.

Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr. Poon Kwok-ying, presented the latest actions of the Hong Kong SAR Government in developing renewable energy to achieve the APEC energy target of doubling the share of renewable energy in the APEC energy mix by 2030. He thanked the APEC member economies for participating in the workshop and encouraged them to adopt innovative technologies to plan energy transformation policies and action plans.

The APEC EEC aims to further APEC’s goals of facilitating energy trade and investment to ensure that energy contributes to improving the economic, social and environmental conditions of APEC economies. The EEC is made up of members from 21 APEC economies and meets twice a year. It organizes workshops on various topics to help achieve APEC’s energy goals.
