Investigators search for person who set fire at East Tech High School

CLEVELAND — Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspected arsonist.

Cleveland police and Cleveland Fire investigators are trying to put a name to a face.

“We don’t believe it was a student at the school, but I don’t know if there’s a connection to the school,” said Karen Thompson, chief operations officer for the Metropolitan School District. Cleveland.

Grainy images were captured on cameras early Saturday morning of the person investigators say intentionally started the fire inside East Tech High School.

“We take any arson very seriously,” said Cleveland Fire Department Lt. Mike Norman.

Norman said that shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday, an alarm alerted school firefighters.

“They came in. They found a fire on a wall, like a padded wall under the basketball hoop. The fire spread to the walls and floor. There was also another small fire near the entrance,” Norman said.

Someone broke a window to enter the school and, once inside, set the school on fire.

“It’s extremely disheartening, it’s disheartening that someone would want to break into a building and cause damage,” Thompson said.

Thompson said school was in session as normal. She hopes the cleanup will be finished next week. The prom scheduled for Saturday evening has been moved to a nearby school.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arsonist’s arrest. Tips can be made to 216-252-7463 or by clicking here.
