Pace said the suspect is a young black man last seen wearing a black or dark-colored jacket and green shorts.

“The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) got behind a dark blue Mustang northbound on Highway 27 and attempted to stop it for a traffic violation,” Pace said. “The vehicle does not have any labels. He failed to stop for the soldier.

Pace said the pursuit continued west on Interstate 20 and south on Highway 61 before turning onto Glass Road in the Vicksburg city limits, where the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

“We’ve been here since about 6:45 p.m.,” Pace said. “The policeman lost him on foot. I have several Sheriff’s Department units here, including our K-9. We have the Vicksburg Police Department K-9 and MHP K-9 here. We have established a perimeter and now have units in the woods.

Pace said he wanted to raise awareness of the situation among area residents and emphasize the importance of citizens not only remaining aware of suspicious behavior, but also not taking unnecessary risks.

“They need to make sure their vehicles are secure. No vehicles left outside with the keys inside. And if anyone approaches them asking for a ride, food or water, please call 911.”

Pace also said residents should not try to help with the search, due to the unknown danger, as well as the presence of K-9 units from three different law enforcement agencies.

“We just want everyone to be safe,” he said. “The suspect will be sought for failure to transfer and possession of stolen property. We have no information at this time as to whether he is armed or not, but he just wants to get out of here, so don’t leave the keys in your vehicle and, if someone knocks on your door asking food, water or a taxi, please call 911.”
