Former FBI Agent Discusses Challenges of Searching for Body of Utah National Guardsman

Jennifer Gledhill appeared in court remotely from the Salt Lake County Jail.

She is accused of murdering her husband Matthew Johnson, whose body has not been found, even weeks after his disappearance.

“There are many technologies that can be used. There is ground penetrating radar, aerial and ultraviolet technologies,” said former FBI special agent Greg Rogers.

PREVIOUS REPORTS:

Rogers, who is not connected to the case, said it is difficult to conduct research in rural areas.

“You’re going to have a lot of results. I mean, dead animals, all sorts of things like that generate types of heat that would be captured by these technologies,” Rogers said.

Court documents say Jennifer Gledhill made statements to an informant about burying Johnson’s body.

Rogers noted that search teams are likely trying to narrow down the exact location.

“It’s very difficult to dig a grave big enough for a human body yourself,” Rogers said.

The Cottonwood Heights Police Department revealed that search teams were looking for a shallow grave.

“So what often happens is the offenders, you know, dig a grave, go down a few feet, get exhausted. They put the body in there, and then they just cover it with whatever materials they have had,” Rogers said.

Rogers added that searches like this can take time or turn up nothing.

“Sometimes you just need a little luck. Sometimes you have a really good dog. Sometimes you don’t find the body, and weeks later someone goes hiking and sees something,” Rogers said .
