Labor’s share of the economy continued to decline in 2023

The share of income from work is an important indicator that reflects who benefits from economic results. It represents the share of income from work in the total income earned in the Dutch economy. Income from work is the sum of employee compensation plus the mixed income earned by the self-employed. In addition to income from work, total income earned consists of the operating profit of companies.

The share of income from work fell in 2023, as corporate operating profits grew faster than income from work. This applies to the share of income from work in the market sector: the entire economy except public administration, education, health and social work, real estate activities, mining and quarrying, and financial and insurance activities. The share of income from work fell already in 2022, as profits also grew faster than income from work.
