Obton and Trina Storage launch 35 MWh storage project in Germany

Obton A/S, a Danish company specializing in renewable energy investments, has announced a strategic partnership with Trina Storage, a subsidiary of Trina Solar, to install a 35 MWh energy storage system in Tangermünde, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This project strengthens Obton’s position in the German market, demonstrating its commitment to the development of energy storage infrastructures.

Strategic Partnership

Torsten Lauritsen, Vice-President and Head of Energy and Power Storage Portfolio Management at Obton, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He expressed his confidence in Trina Storage, renowned for its reliability and quality for over 25 years. This partnership is seen as an opportunity for Obton to capitalize on Trina Storage’s expertise in the field of energy storage. Trina Storage will supply its Elementa cabinets, Power Electronics power conversion systems, and associated software and controls for the Tangermünde site. The project, initiated by Kyon Energy, will be jointly managed until turnkey commissioning, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024. Once operational, the site will offer arbitration and network support services, including primary and secondary control powers.

Technology & Safety

Trina Storage’s Elementa storage solution is specifically designed for network-scale installations. It includes liquid-cooled LFP batteries, fire suppression systems and configurable battery management systems. These technologies ensure reliable performance and optimum safety for the Tangermünde site. The Tangermünde project is part of a global framework agreement between Kyon Energy and Obton, aimed at improving energy storage capacity in Germany. This project illustrates Obton’s strategy of strengthening its investments in advanced and reliable energy infrastructures.

Investment outlook

The Tangermünde site will be integrated into the ‘Obton Dynamic,’ investment fund managed by Obton Forvaltning A/S. This fund offers investors opportunities in renewable energy and energy storage projects, strengthening Obton’s ability to attract capital for similar future projects. The partnership with Trina Storage represents a first for the latter in Germany, and could pave the way for other collaborative projects in the country. This strategic initiative is designed to meet the growing demand for energy storage solutions in Europe.
