Singapore RFID tag for vehicle entry permit tracks SG registered cars with outstanding traffic summons

Motorists driving vehicles from Singapore who have received summonses from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be warned at the city-state’s border with Malaysia, according to a social media post from ROADS Singapore. The image published on the Facebook account represents a digital display indicating the number of saman issued to a vehicle.

Previously, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) said it would take enforcement action against Singaporean motorists with unpaid traffic fines in Malaysia from January 1, 2025. According to a report from Strait TimesSingaporeans accumulated 35,000 summons between 1990 and June 2024, worth RM3.5 million.

In May this year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia will be required to have a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) from October 1.

Although no action has been taken against motorists so far, those who have received summonses are urged to settle them before the January 1 deadline. The VEP serves as identification for vehicles entering Malaysia, allowing authorities to track traffic violations committed by foreign-registered vehicles.

Singaporean motorists entering the two Johor checkpoints at the Sultan Iskandar Complex via the Causeway as well as the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex via the Second Link must obtain a VEP. Without this, they may be refused entry to Johor or fined up to RM2,000. The VEP system uses an RFID tag issued by the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) and costs RM10 each.

Payment for these summons can be made through the MyBayar PDRM or MyEG portals, and foreign nationals can use their passport number to create an account on these portals. Enforcement will be phased from October 1 to December 31, when foreign vehicles with unpaid fines will still be allowed to enter and exit Malaysia. However, from January 1, 2025, the full application will be implemented.
