According to Techarc, the success of electronics in online retailing in India is due to its perishable nature, portability, supply chain innovations and a strong ecosystem of information from bloggers and reviewers. Initially, marketplaces offered brand exclusivity, but regulatory changes have put an end to this practice, forcing marketplaces to focus on building customer trust through fair business practices and transparency, the report said.

Techarc believes that accessibility of information is key to building consumer trust. It argues that comprehensive product details increase trust and create markets as knowledgeable experts. The study highlighted trust-building factors such as detailed information, transparent pricing, on-time delivery, accurate order fulfillment and reliable after-sales support, it said, adding that the comparison between Amazon and Flipkart shows the differences in information availability across key electronics categories.

Smartphoneswhich account for over 60 percent of the electronics GMV, are reportedly critical for both platforms. Both Amazon and Flipkart provide extensive information about the smartphone specifications and features, but the research firm found that Amazon stands out with its clean interface and engaging product images, which help in faster decision-making. It compared the OnePlus 12 product listing on Amazon and Flipkart to find that Amazon showcases the device’s camera setup with images and explains the fast charging mechanism, helping shoppers easily understand the technology and innovations.

“In our comparative analysis of the marketplaces – Amazon and Flipkart – we found that Amazon offers much more detailed and in-depth information about the (personal electronics) products being studied for this purpose,” Techarc said.
