Civil society, along with students, staged a protest at the Central Shaheed Minar this afternoon demanding banning of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and resignation of President Mohammad Shahabuddin.

Members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, National Citizens Committee and people from various professions joined the march which started earlier in the day from the premises of Dhaka University.

Speaking to the Business Standard, National Citizens Committee member Adib Arif said, “Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League are terrorist organizations filled with mass murderers.

“They attacked students of Chittagong University in the middle of the night (yesterday). If these organizations are not banned, Bangladesh will lose its overall security as a sovereign state.”

Nasir Uddin Patwari, chairman of the committee, said: “The president is an ally of fascism. He was in favor of genocide. We demand his resignation. »

Yesterday, students of Dhaka University took out a torchlight procession demanding a ban on the Awami League and all its affiliated wings and organizations, including the Chhatra League and the Jubo League.

Students, under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, gathered near the Raju Memorial and protested against the attacks by Chhatra League and Jubo League members on Chittagong University students on campus over early in the day.

According to media reports, members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League yesterday carried out an armed attack on students of Chittagong University, leaving several injured.

Protesters also demanded the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, warning that they would lay siege to Bangabahaban.

The incident took place around 4 am near the university premises. In response, students gathered to protest in the Zero Point area of ​​campus.

Citing witnesses, the Dhaka Tribune reported that around 4 am, Chhatra League activists first attacked a shop called ‘Apayayan’ near the university’s railway gate. They then vandalized several other nearby stores and fired a few bullets, causing panic among students and residents.

Upon hearing the news, a group of general students marched to the Railgate area in protest.

Citing locals, the media outlet reported that in retaliation, students vandalized a shop associated with the Chhatra League and Jubo League. During this clash, several students were injured, some in serious condition.

Nahid Hossain, a student at Chittagong University, said 8-10 students were injured in the attack carried out by members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League.

A large number of police officers were deployed on campus to maintain order.
