Samsung’s Vietnam plants to use more green energy

Sustainability is at the forefront of Samsung’s efforts. The company has made significant efforts in recent years to reduce its environmental footprint through a greater share of renewable energy in its energy mix, increased use of recycled materials in the manufacturing and packaging of devices, and efforts to reduce electronic waste.

Samsung operates energy-intensive factories around the world, so it can make the biggest impact by choosing to use renewable energy sources to power those facilities. The company took another step in the right direction by committing to using more green energy at its factories in Vietnam.

Samsung to buy more renewable energy for factories

Vietnam is home to one of Samsung’s largest manufacturing plants, where the company makes everything from smartphones to other mobile devices and home appliances. Naturally, these factories are energy-intensive, and switching to green energy will certainly reduce their environmental footprint.

The Vietnamese government recently allowed companies to buy renewable energy directly from private power producers. This means that Samsung’s factories in Vietnam can now buy green energy directly from independent power producers, something the company fully intends to do. This would ease the state-owned power producer’s capacity constraints if it is unable to provide the level of renewable energy Samsung expects for its facilities.

The fact that companies can buy power directly from private producers also provides an incentive for manufacturers to further strengthen their renewable energy generation capacity as demand from large companies, particularly Samsung, which recently pledged to invest billions of dollars to expand its manufacturing facilities in Vietnam, continues to grow.
