Beware! Connecticut Police Find Another Skimming Device on ATM

On Wednesday, July 3, the Fairfield Police Department in Connecticut issued a warning to the public about a found skim device that records credit card information. The FPD posted the warning on its official Facebook page, writing:

“On Monday, July 1, a skimming device was found on an ATM at the Mobil Gas Station at 1271 Stratfield Road. An ATM repair technician discovered the device, but it is unknown when it was placed there.”

This is happening all over Connecticut, including the incident in Berlin months ago. These devices and scams are becoming more and more common these days, so it takes some work on our part to make sure we don’t become victims. Below is some helpful information I’ve gathered in Power to help you identify and avoid credit card skimmers.

How to Detect a Credit Card Skimmer

Time says:

Credit card skimmers are physical—often bulky—devices that you should be able to spot. Some skimmers seem unnervingly formal, whether they’re a simple extension that plugs into the credit card reader or an elaborate casing that covers the entire terminal. The easiest way to spot a credit card skimmer is to tug, pull, and pull. Before you insert your card into the point-of-sale terminal, wiggle a few parts of the device to see if anything is loose.

This Berlin Police Department adds:

  • Check for alignment issues between the card reader and the panel underneath it.
  • Skimmers are often placed on top of the card reader itself, causing it to stick out at an odd angle or cover the arrows on the panel

The safest way to pay is to use tap-to-pay, whether it’s built into your credit card or your phone. FICO says tap-to-pay hides your card information from your ATM or PIN pad and replaces it with a token that’s “nearly impossible to decipher.”
