Michael Jeffries, former Abercrombie CEO, arrested in sex trafficking case, reports WSJ

Michael Jeffries, former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, was arrested by federal agents investigating allegations that he ran a sex trafficking operation, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

He was arrested Tuesday in Florida as part of an investigation by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York, according to the report.

Abercrombie & Fitch declined to comment on questions from Reuters, while Jeffries could not immediately be reached.

Last year, a group of former Abercrombie & Fitch male models sued the retailer and former CEO, alleging the company benefited from a sex trafficking operation run by Jeffries.

Former model David Bradberry’s proposed class-action lawsuit in Manhattan federal court claims Jeffries forced models to take drugs and engage in sex acts with him and others for the chance to be featured in catalogs Abercrombie provocateurs.

The lawsuit alleged that company executives knew about this conduct and that Abercrombie paid settlements to people accusing Jeffries of sexual abuse or harassment.

Jeffries, who served as CEO from 1992 to 2014, was credited with transforming the retailer into a successful teen clothing maker known for its cologne-filled stores and advertisements featuring semi-nude models. He resigned, however, following criticism that he had failed to keep pace with teenage buyers. REUTERS
