Samsung Announces Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 join the Galaxy AI train that launched earlier this year with the Galaxy S24 lineup. There are also a few interesting improvements to note (especially in the case of Galaxy Z Flip 6)In this article we will briefly introduce you to the new devices.

Samsung can be safely called a pioneer in the foldable smartphone market, or smartphones that can be folded. The first Galaxy Fold hit the market in 2019. Five years later, the company is today announcing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Flip 6.

In terms of design, the foldable category is no longer very exciting in itself. That is, the initial surprise of a foldable smartphone has already passed a bit. In addition, Samsung is also systematically developing devices without taking big steps. In the case of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, a relatively big change last year was a much larger external screen (the screen visible when the device is folded). This year, at first glance, there is no such big change. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 received a slightly wider, and therefore slightly larger, external screen. This was the request of users who found it a bit too narrow, according to Samsung’s research.

Thinner and lighter

One of the main changes to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 is that both are thinner and lighter than the previous generation. This shouldn’t come at the expense of battery life. That’s why lighter materials have been used. In addition, the improved cooling of the new devices has certainly played a role in this. The so-called vapor chamber in the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is less than half the size of the previous model, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has such a vapor chamber for the first time this year. More efficient heat dissipation makes it more compact overall. Keep in mind that in the case of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 there is also another SoC inside, which is much more powerful than last year’s, so better heat dissipation is desirable in any case.

Something that doesn’t get much attention from Samsung itself, but which we think is very important for this type of device, is the fact that the hinge has been significantly improved again. Last year, there was already no more space between the two halves, but now the hinge itself has been reinforced even more. It distributes shocks better than the hinge in the previous generation. The bend that is visible when the foldable device is unfolded is also slightly less visible in this generation. Samsung itself also emphasizes the fact that the edges of the new devices are smooth and straight. This is a contrast to the previous generations.

Lots of artificial intelligence

While the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 is not about hardware, it is largely about software. And we are talking about AI in particular. Galaxy AI gets another boost with these new devices. We already talked about Galaxy AI at length in our review of the Samsung Galaxy S24 line. We will not repeat that here. Part of the AI capabilities in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 come from Google. In fact, Samsung has a partnership with it at the moment. Part of it is also Samsung itself that is adding AI to the devices.

For business users, the AI capabilities don’t add much. Of course, there’s value in something like Note Assist. It provides translations, summaries, and automatic formatting of notes. Composer is also part of the Samsung keyboard on devices. It allows you to compose emails based on keywords. Apart from that, most of the AI capabilities are aimed primarily at (creative) consumers. The cameras in the devices in particular have received the necessary attention from Samsung.

It’s also good to know for business users that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be secured with Samsung Knox. Additionally, Samsung promises seven OS updates and seven years of security updates.

Finally a better camera in the Galaxy Z Flip 6

A few years ago, we used the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 for a while. As for us, one of the main drawbacks of these devices was the rather average camera. In the case of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the announcement that it had the same camera as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was an unpleasant surprise. This immediately made the device quite uninteresting for us. Samsung indicates that we were not the only ones who wanted a better camera. So in the case of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, a better camera has finally been implemented. As soon as we get a sample, we will of course take a closer look at it.

In addition, especially in the case of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, battery life was also an issue. It was not very good. Samsung promises better in the next generation. If it delivers on this promise and the camera is actually much better than in previous generations, Samsung will immediately make the Flip 6 much more interesting as far as we are concerned.

Price and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are available for pre-order starting today, and will start shipping on July 19. The devices will be widely available on July 24. (Disclaimer: This information is for the Dutch market. It may vary in other geographic regions.)

We’re not too keen on divulging specs right now, simply because it’s not something we’re particularly interested in. Samsung clearly feels the same way, as they barely talk about specs anymore.
