Bioenergy Devco wins Energy Company of the Year 2024 award: Pioneering a sustainable future

In a world increasingly attuned to the imperatives of sustainability, Bioenergy Devco has emerged as a beacon of innovation and leadership. This global powerhouse in advanced anaerobic digestion systems was honored as Energy Company of the Year 2024 at the prestigious Sustainability Delivery Awards held in Boston. This recognition is a testament to Bioenergy Devco’s continued dedication to championing green energy solutions and paving the way for a sustainable future.

Recognizing Sustainability Excellence

Environment Analyst’s Sustainability Delivery Awards celebrate organizations that have made monumental strides in environmental, social and governance (ESG) innovation and leadership. This year, Bioenergy Devco stood out from its competitors, earning recognition for its groundbreaking efforts in the green energy sector. The awards honor those who have made significant contributions to the global mission to achieve climate goals and net zero emissions.

“We are honored and grateful to be recognized as the 2024 Energy Company of the Year,” said Nick Thomas, CEO of Bioenergy Devco. “This award is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our team, our advanced anaerobic digestion technology that powers the circular economy, and our commitment to developing the next generation of energy infrastructure. We are also fortunate to work with exceptional partners like Baltimore Gas & Electric, who are leaders in the adoption of renewable energy in Maryland.”

Pioneering Maryland Bioenergy Center

Bioenergy Devco’s distinction is largely attributed to its pioneering organic waste recycling facility in Jessup, Maryland. The state-of-the-art Maryland Bioenergy Center, which recently earned recognition in the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards, exemplifies the company’s leadership in sustainable business practices.

Operating at full capacity of 120,000 tons per year, the Maryland Bioenergy Center uses anaerobic digestion technology to transform food waste into renewable natural gas and nutrient-rich soil amendments. The facility’s capacity of over 300,000 MMBtu powers over 7,000 homes per year, and its carbon dioxide reductions are equivalent to taking 19,000 gasoline-powered cars off the road each year. This facility not only addresses the urgent problem of food waste, but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring its critical role in combating climate change.

A multi-faceted approach to sustainable development

The success of the Maryland Bioenergy Center is evidence of Bioenergy Devco’s holistic, solution-oriented approach to sustainability. Working with the food industry, municipalities, and waste haulers, the facility offers an innovative and cost-effective solution for recycling organic waste. Food manufacturers and processors benefit from reduced disposal costs and increased sustainability efforts, while state and local governments see support for zero-waste initiatives and local green job creation. This collaborative model fosters economic growth and sustainability, proving that environmental responsibility and economic prosperity can go hand in hand.

Esteemed recognition from industry leaders

The Sustainability Delivery Awards judging panel was comprised of respected industry experts and analysts, led by Environment Analyst Managing Director Ross Griffiths. The panel included such distinguished individuals as Lucy Bradbury, Global ESG Training & Development Lead at AECOM; Jordana Vasquez, Senior Manager, Climate Resilience & Equity at Resilient Cities Network; Edward Brauer, Senior Hydraulic Engineer at the US Army Corps of Engineers; and Anjuliee Mittelman, PhD, Environmental Engineer at the US DoT Volpe Center. This diverse and experienced panel underscores the credibility and prestige of the awards, further solidifying Bioenergy Devco’s position as a leader in the sustainability sector.
