Yusuf promises to revive Kano’s education sector

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on Wednesday reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector in the state.

Yusuf gave this assurance at the opening of the two-day Education Recovery Conference held at the Dangote Business School, Bayero University, Kano, with the theme, “Repositioning Education in Kano State: Navigating the Path to Excellence.”

“We were prepared before we declared a state of emergency in education,” he told Education Minister Tahir Mamman, who was represented by Dr Folake Olatunji.

Yusuf stated that no investment in a child brings as much benefits as education, while appealing to the participants to actively engage in the discussions.

“Our priority is to draw on the wisdom of experts and our determination to chart a new course to ensure that no child in this state is left behind.

“We have the political will, but parents, teachers, government and everyone, including the private sector, should roll up their sleeves. From our side, we believe it is doable,” Yusuf said.

Director of Development, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, British High Commission, Ms Cynthia Rowe said the UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the State Government in addressing the serious challenges in the State.

“The UK’s most important education objective in Nigeria is to ensure that all girls and boys have access to a high-quality education.

“Education is the foundation for lasting poverty reduction, building prosperous, resilient economies and peaceful, stable societies,” she said.

In his address, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa said, “There is a need to harmonize the learning and teaching process in our higher education institutions and also re-define our goals from time to time.

“Since the creation of Kano State in the late 1960s until the mid-1980s, our state had a Periodic Development Plan and we need to get back to development planning if our state is to develop; otherwise it will remain one big landscape of disconnected contracts and disconnected researchers who will be unable to link their work to the development policy and vision of the state.”

The Education Minister commended the state government for organising the conference and striving to save the education sector from total collapse. Yusuf promises to revive the education sector in Kano
