Jet chaser who monitored Zuckerberg, Trump and Musk says Meta banned his accounts

Meta has removed accounts that track the plane movements of its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, X owner Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Kim Kardashian, former President Trump and others, the owner of the platform said Tuesday. Jack Sweeney account.

“Today I have a feeling of déjà vu, reminiscent of the suspension of all my accounts on Twitter. My Instagram and Threads account, @elonmusksjet, has been suspended again,” Sweeney shared in a statement on Threads. “Unlike previous suspensions, where warnings or status updates were provided with reasons, this time the account simply appears hidden, with no options to interact or receive information.”

The Florida student has been tracking celebrities’ movements for years, leading to the suspension of a then-Twitter tracking account in 2022, followed by Taylor Swift’s threat to take legal action against him this year.

Sweeney says his actions, which use publicly available data, are lawful and crucial for journalists who track major partnerships with corporate executives and carbon emissions linked to executive travel.

“(Musk) has so many companies that you can see when he spends time on X, Tesla or Space X visiting different places. He’s been taking tons of flights to Pennsylvania for his America PAC events the last few days,” Sweeney told The Hill. “There’s a lot of theft going on around him and the timing leads me to believe that there’s someone, I don’t know who, that I’ve been following and who has obviously contacted Meta.”

The Hill has contacted Meta for comment.

After being blocked from logging into his Meta tracking accounts, Sweeney said he tried emailing the company but didn’t expect a response.

Meta told TechCrunch that the accounts were disabled for “violating our privacy policy.”

But Sweeney believes X and Meta are “selectively” enforcing their rules allowing some accounts to remain active while others are removed.

“I’ve been following Jets on Instagram for a long time, and about 10 months ago my account that follows Taylor Swift’s Jets (@taylorswiftjets) was suspended. Yet my other plane tracking accounts continued to perform very well, demonstrating a clear case of selective enforcement,” he said. “This is likely due to Meta’s partnership with Swift, which results in special treatment. This raises serious questions of fairness, given that other plane-tracking accounts, unrelated to Swift, remained active while hers was deleted.

When his Twitter accounts that followed Musk were deleted, he revamped them with a one-day delay in posting. Sweeney told The Hill that if Meta gave him the chance, he would do the same on their platform.

“If they (the accounts) were reactivated and I had the option to delay posting, I would. But if not, I will migrate to other platforms,” Sweeney said, adding that Telegram, Reddit and Madaston were all viable options.

“Given the risk of physical harm to individuals, and in accordance with the recommendation of the Independent Oversight Board, we have disabled these accounts for violating our privacy policy,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch.
