JCFD Gets New Device That Will Increase Firefighter Safety | WJHL

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) has a new device to help protect firefighters.

The device, a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) washer, will remove hazardous particles from SCBAs, helmets, masks, gloves and firefighters’ books.

“Compared to the general population, studies show that firefighters have a higher risk of being diagnosed with various forms of cancer,” the JCFD said in a news release. “They are exposed to hazardous chemicals and carcinogenic particles while performing their duties. Effective cleaning and decontamination of all protective equipment after each use can reduce exposure.”

JCFD is the first department in Tennessee to have an SCBA washing machine, according to the city. The machine joins other specially designed washing machines that remove hazardous materials from protective clothing.

“Investing in an SCBA washer is a priority for the health and safety of Johnson City firefighters,” Chief David Bell said in a release. “Clean equipment means better performance and protection, allowing us to focus on saving lives and serving our communities.”

The department received a grant from the Last Call Foundation to purchase half of an SCBA washing machine. The City of Johnson City matched the grant to purchase the washing machine for $34,000.

Following initial cleaning of firefighting equipment, an SCBA washer will be used to ensure the cleanliness of breathing equipment following a structure fire.
