Two Teens Charged with Planting Explosive Device in Mesa

PHOENIX — Authorities said Thursday that two teenagers were charged with placing an explosive device on the front door of a Mesa home, injuring the homeowner.

According to a news release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, 19-year-old Eliyzar Frias and 18-year-old Daniel Traynor walked up to a home near Guadalupe Road and Arizona Avenue on the evening of June 13 and placed a device by the front door.

The homeowner was alerted by movement outside his door via his security system. When he approached it, the device activated.

As a result, several windows were shattered, including one directly above the owner’s head, according to the release. The victim believed he had been shot.

The explosion caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to the home.

Frias and Traynor face several charges and are being held on $100,000 bail. The charges include:

  • One case of arson in an occupied building.
  • One count of violent assault.
  • One case of planting explosives.
  • One count of bodily harm.
  • One count of disturbing public order.

“Regardless of an individual’s age, these types of destructive and potentially deadly acts will not be tolerated,” Maricopa County District Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement.
