Electric ‘air taxis’ move closer to reality thanks to new FAA regulations

(CNN) – Just as the Jetsons predicted, flying cars could become a reality – or at least a variation of it.

On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration released new rules that allow half-helicopter, half-plane electric “air taxis” to begin flying in the skies.

Nearly 900 pages of special regulations have been released, explaining how pilots will learn the new subset of aircraft designs.

Federal aviation officials call the newly released regulations “the final piece of the puzzle.”

This is an example of the type of aircraft people might see in the future, known as an electric vertical takeoff and landing, or eVTOL, aircraft.

The plane can fly like an airplane but take off and land like helicopters at traditional airports as well as new, purpose-built “Verti-ports” in urban areas.
