How startup Vertus Energy can revolutionize the biogas market

In a groundbreaking achievement for the renewable energy sector, Viennese startup Vertus Energy has secured 8.75 million euros in seed funding to develop its cutting-edge biogas technology and increase access to biomethane across Europe. This industrial biotech startup Waste-to-X, known for its advanced control of bacterial behavior, has the potential to revolutionize the biogas market with its innovative solutions.

This solid support from global investors underscores the promise of Vertus Energy’s technology. Vic Pascucci, Managing General Partner and co-founder of Energy Capital Ventures, highlighted the startup’s excellent technology and team, saying:

“As the only venture capital fund dedicated exclusively to Green Molecules™, we have spent the last few years analyzing technologies and startups in the biogas, biomethanation and renewable natural gas space. It was clear from our extensive due diligence that Vertus Energy’s technology, commercial advances and team were far superior to anything in the market. We supported Vertus Energy because they have a fantastic team, clearly demonstrable technology and verifiable results that far outperform competitive options.”

Wolfgang Neubert, General Partner at Amadeus APEX Technology Fund, shares this view, pointing to the company’s deep technological innovation and solid scientific foundations as key factors influencing the investment.

Turning waste into renewable energy

Founded in 2021, Vertus Energy has created BRIO, a biogas technology that generates biomethane approximately three times faster than current methods. This breakthrough solution increases energy production by up to 60% from the same waste and is poised to significantly impact the renewable energy landscape, particularly in Europe, where biomethane production targets are set to reach 35 billion cubic meters annually until 2030.

Specifically, BRIO is a modular hardware unit designed to retrofit anaerobic digestion plants, supporting improved energy efficiency by controlling existing bacteria from creating new strains. This allows the company to maximize resources while supporting its sustainability efforts in waste management.

Vertus Energy is also developing a new carbon dioxide sequestration technology called BODA, which converts raw CO2 into renewable natural gas.

The startup’s significant funding, led by Energy Capital Ventures, will focus on scaling the company’s new BRIO technology. business hopes to accelerate BRIO implementation in commercial units, from full-scale wastewater treatment plants to much larger biogas facilities.

WITH global biogas market projected annual growth of 5.2% to reach $86.7 billion by 2030, Vertus Energy is well-positioned to make a significant impact. The startup’s mission to deliver sustainable energy solutions aligns with broader global efforts to transition to renewable energy sources, enhancing energy security and environmental sustainability.
