A Clare agriculture official says no other sector would operate in the conditions farmers are working in.

The Irish Milk and Cream Suppliers’ Association has renewed its call for an all-sector farming summit amid claims the average farmer works 60 hours a week for less than the minimum wage.

According to the Irish Farmers’ Association, Clare has 508,000 acres of arable land and farming contributes €1 billion a year to the local economy.

Martin McMahon, a farmer from O’Callaghan’s Mills and chairman of the Clare branch of ICMSA, believes that given the amount of revenue generated by the agricultural industry, farmers should not have any problems.
