3 Akshaya Patra kitchens in Telangana to run on renewable energy

Hyderabad: Akshaya Patra Foundation in partnership with HSBC Global Service Centres in India has launched three new sustainability projects at its kitchens in Kandi (Sangareddy), Narsingi (Rangareddy) and Warangal. These kitchens will be powered by a 165 kW solar power plant and a 2,000 kg biogas plant.

The energy saving units are expected to generate clean, renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions by about 152 tons per year. These kitchens provide hot, nutritious midday meals to 18,803 beneficiaries.

The solar plant is expected to generate savings over 20 years, which will translate into an expansion of services.

Biogas systems will replace conventional LPG for cooking, using organic waste from the kitchen. This waste-to-resource conversion improves waste management and soil health through organic fertilizer in the form of slurry, which will benefit about 27,500 beneficiaries over 15 years.

Through these sustainable measures, HSBC and Akshaya Patra Foundation have provided over 1.25 million nutritious midday meals to children in Telangana and Karnataka during fiscal year 2023-24.

Mamatha Madireddy, Head of HSBC India Global Service Centres, said, “The initiative is not only about energy efficiency but also provides children with healthy midday meals in an eco-friendly manner. We are proud to partner with Akshaya Patra Foundation to make this vision a reality.”

Sri Satya Gaura Chandra Dasa, Trustee and Regional President, Akshaya Patra Foundation Hyderabad expressed gratitude saying, “We are deeply grateful to HSBC India Global Services Centres for their generous contribution. It is a tangible step towards fostering social well-being and environmental awareness, significantly enhancing our capacity to provide food to underprivileged children.”
