Amazon India is currently piloting a Hindi interface for its mobile website, in a bid to make shopping easier and attract more customers to its platform.

“We work backward from the needs of our customers and are constantly exploring and experimenting with new ways to make shopping convenient and easy for customers in India. As part of this, we have started piloting Amazon.in shopping in Hindi,” a company spokesperson told Economic Times.

E-commerce companies are looking to expand across India, but language remains a barrier to reaching these markets, so they are looking to switch to regional languages to connect with their target audience.

Amazon competitor Flipkart recently acquired Liv.ai, a speech-to-text platform that supports 10 Indian languages, to expand its presence in tier-2 and tier-3 cities by offering conversational e-commerce capabilities in local languages.

Amazon India, with the support of its parent company, is aggressively expanding across verticals to maintain its market leadership position in the e-commerce space. The experiment with regional languages is expected to help the company achieve its goal of reaching another 100 million e-commerce customers.
