NIA court convicts second accused in Pak-backed Indian defense spy case

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has convicted the second key accused in a Pakistan-backed Indian military espionage case.

Rajakbhai Kumbhar of West Kachchh district of Gujarat is the second accused to be convicted in case RC-03/2020/NIA-LKW. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment under different provisions of the IPC and UA(P) Act, with a maximum term of six years, along with fine.

All sentences will run concurrently and one month’s imprisonment will be added for each count in the event of failure to pay the fine. Earlier, the special NIA court had convicted accused Md Rashid of Chandauli district, UP, in this case initially registered by the ATS, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, alleging that Rashid was in contact with Defense officials and of Pakistan’s ISI.

The ATS had tasked Rashid with providing Pakistani agents with photographs of sensitive, tactically and strategically important locations in India, as well as movements of the Indian Army. These photographs, including those of the defense insignia, were taken from his cell phone.

The NIA, which took over the case in April 2020, filed a case against Rashid in July 2020 and then filed an additional case against Rajakbhai Kumbhar in February 2021. The agency’s investigations revealed that Rajakbhai had conspired with Rashid and ISI agents based in Pakistan to carry out terrorist acts. acts, as well as preparatory acts for their commission.

They had also conspired to cover up the nefarious anti-Indian designs perpetrated by agents based in Pakistan. Rajakbhai had facilitated Rashid by providing funds in exchange for the sensitive photographs, which Rashid had sent to ISI agents, as per NIA investigations.
