Female athletes lost nearly 900 medals to transgender competitors: UN report

The goal of gender parity at the 2024 Paris Olympics has been marred by gender conflicts, with a recent United Nations report expressing concerns over issues surrounding women’s sporting competition.

According to the report, “Violence against women and girls in sport” Transgender athletes have won around 900 medals in different women’s sports across several events, replacing female athletes.

It also drew attention to the fact that more than 600 female athletes had lost to male-born individuals in various competitions, intensifying the debate over the fairness of the competitions.

These findings highlight significant gaps in IOC policies that continue to impact athletes around the world, raising questions about the future of gender inclusion in sport.

“Policies implemented by international federations, national governing bodies, as well as national legislation in some countries, allow men who identify as women to compete in women’s sporting categories,” the report states.

“In other cases, this practice is not explicitly prohibited and is therefore tolerated in practice. The replacement of the women’s sports category with a mixed category has resulted in an increasing number of female athletes losing opportunities , including medals, when competing against men.”

“According to information received, as of March 30, 2024, more than 600 female athletes in more than 400 competitions had lost more than 890 medals in 29 different sports,” the report said.
