Brits can get the iPhone’s huge AI upgrade in days just by changing one setting, including a trick to remove people from selfies

BRITS will get a major (and free) iPhone upgrade in just a few days – and there’s a trick to make it even better.

This is the following big iPhone update – iOS 18.1 – which will write text for you, let you remove objects from photos and instantly summarize your notifications.

And because of the slow rollout of AI-based Apple Intelligence, the launch is a bit confusing.

Some of the best AI news features are (for now) locked to devices using American English.

So by changing the language on your phone you can access some of the new tricks here in Britain.

But you’ll get them eventually if you’re willing to wait.

WHAT HAPPENS IN IOS 18.1?

iOS 18.1 is notable because it introduces some of the new Apple Intelligence features.

So there is a new feature called Writing Tools, which will allow you to use AI to write, rewrite, proofread and summarize text in almost any application.

There’s a new design for Siri that will use a new light animation at the edge of the screen to display when you’re chatting.

And you should be able to speak to Siri a little more naturally, including being able to change your mind mid-sentence.

You’ll receive summary notifications and suggested replies in the Messages app.

There is also a new cleanup feature that will allow you to remove all objects (including people) from the background of your photos.

So you can literally remove an entire person from a selfie, if you want.

And they will be replaced with what Apple’s AI considers appropriate padding.

HOW CAN BRITS GET APPLE INTELLIGENCE FEATURES?

There are three ways to get new Apple Intelligence features.

The first is to simply install iOS 18.1 and then change the language.

You will need to set the language of your device and Siri to American English.

This means your iPhone will respond to you in American English, which might drive you crazy – but you might not even notice.

The second way is to install the beta version of iOS, which is a testing version of the software.

Indeed, iOS 18.2 enters developer beta today and adds support for British English.

Installing the developer beta is a bit complicated and probably not worth it.

But iOS 18.2 will likely arrive in public beta in the coming weeks, so follow our guide to get it instead – how to install iPhone iOS beta.

The third method is to simply wait until iOS 18.2 hits the general public as a proper release in December.

This will add full support for British English, without the need to switch languages.

This is probably the best option for most users.

But if you’re a big fan of gadgets, you might just want to try changing your language in iOS 18.1.
