The Elevators and Lifts Act and regulations enter into force

The Elevators and Lifts Act and related regulations came into force today.

The Elevators and Lifts Act, which is intended to help formalise authorities, address regulatory gaps and provide a standard framework to align lifting equipment legislation in the Northwest Territories (NWT) with the rest of Canada, was given assent in November 2022 but could not come into force until the regulations were finalised and ready for adoption.

Elevator and crane industry representatives met with Department of Infrastructure staff to discuss the changes and were pleased with the new statutory framework. Northwest Territories residents were also given the opportunity to provide feedback via the Have Your Say portal; however, no relevant comments were received.

Previously, the Northwest Territories’ 230 elevators and hoisting systems were subject to the Electrical Protection Act. The act authorized regulation of the electrical components of lifting equipment, but not its non-electrical components.
