Samsung researcher named chairman of ITU-R coordination group for 6G standardization, 6G research and innovation

Samsung Electronics to Lead 6G Standardization in Collaboration with International Telecommunications Union and Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R)1 until 2029.

Researcher HyoungJin Choi of Samsung Research has been appointed as the Chair of the IMT-2030 (6G) Coordination Group at the ITU-R Working Party 5D (WP 5D) meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 25 to July 2. Choi will chair the ITU-R 6G standardization group for the second time, having previously chaired the 6G Vision Group from 2021 to 2023.

The Coordination Group will be responsible for defining the 6G standards development process, as well as for creating a 6G candidate submission template and reviewing candidate proposals.

Standardizing next-generation communications requires a highly competitive and collaborative process involving various actors.

In November 2023, ITU-R released the IMT-2030 Framework Recommendation, defining the future and overall direction of 6G development. By 2026, ITU-R aims to establish technical performance requirements for 6G technologies. These requirements will form the basis for candidate 6G technologies to be developed by standards organizations such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).2 and later submitted to ITU-R. ITU-R will then evaluate and coordinate the submissions, with the technical specifications for 6G expected to be finalized by 2030.

With the IMT-2030 Framework Recommendation providing key performance indicators, usage scenarios and a roadmap for 6G standardization, spectrum and commercialization, the industry is now ready to undertake detailed standardization activities. In the future, countries and companies will compete for leadership in setting 6G communication standards, including performance requirements and frequency bands.

Samsung intends to actively cooperate with influential standards organizations and continue to develop innovative communication technologies, seeking to strengthen its position as a global leader in 6G standardization.
