“It’s so concealable.” Arrest leads to discovery of unusually small firearm

WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — When Wyandotte police stopped David Bush near Goddard and Fort Street, it was because they say he ran a red light. But the October traffic stop proved anything but routine.

Police said Bush admitted to having a knife after arresting him, and that was the only weapon he claimed to have.

“The subject was adamant that he did not have any other weapons on him,” Wyandotte Police Chief Archie Hamilton said. “He specifically asked her, ‘Do you have any weapons with you?’ No weapons.”

But Bush had weapons, two of which were concealed.

“Right here, he sees the bulge, now look, now the officer shoots, and he has this gun around his neck, which is dangerous. Now the officer tells his partner to come over there, because now he tries to grab the bulge of his neck, which is a bad situation for the policeman, because this guy is not safe. What if it goes off? Chief Hamilton showing us the body camera video.

Chief Hamilton says this traffic stop could have easily turned violent.

“It was a good thing that he had no malicious intent, because he could have hurt these officers. And it was a good thing that these officers came across this individual. It started with a simple traffic stop . He didn’t heed a red signal. No “It’s a big deal. And then it turned into a criminal arrest. Someone who is not only armed with two weapons…illicit handguns, but is also intoxicated,” Chief Hamilton said.

The chief is now warning the community about the type of unusually small firearms found.

“It was actually a black powder handgun, which is something we don’t see every day,” he said.

Chief Hamilton says he has never seen this type of single-shot weapon in his 24 years of service.

“What makes it so dangerous is that it’s so concealable. It’s the type of weapon that someone could have in their possession at any community event. I mean… anyone can hide it. They can put it in a purse. They can put it in their shoe,” he said.

He particularly urges drivers to avoid confrontations

“We often see people get angry while driving, don’t we. They get angry if they are interrupted. Well, that person is probably drunk… most likely “She could cut someone off. What if that person was intoxicated with these weapons and they become the victim of a road rage incident? So people need to be aware of that, you know, let it go.” , said Chief Hamilton.

Bush was arraigned Tuesday on several charges, including carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon while intoxicated.

He is expected to be back in court Thursday.
