Digital comic book reader app Omnibus officially closes • AIPT

Digital comic book reader app Ominbius is closing up shop. In an email to subscribers today, Omnibus revealed it will be closing its app, and readers have until August 21 to download backup copies of purchased comics.

But why now?

As Omnibus stated:

We are not growing fast enough and would need a significant amount of external funding to continue and become sustainable. It is a difficult business to achieve this in the current landscape.

Omnibus revealed that email reminders will be sent closer to the deadline, with the possibility of limited refunds for “our superfans.”

This is incredibly devastating news in an industry that has very few options when it comes to reading digital comics. Comixology used to be the king of digital reading, but it closed shop and moved to Amazon late last year. The app has been plagued with a number of issues since it launched on Amazon, though Amazon has been rolling out fixes for months, as it was the primary way to get comics.

Another growing option is GlobalComix. Read our review of their beta here.
