Matthew Rubino, MD, MBA, Appointed Chair of Surgery and Physician Executive for Surgical Services

Matthew Rubino, MD, MBA, FACS, has been named chair of the Department of Surgery and physician executive for Surgical Services. Rubino has served as interim in these roles since September 2023.

In his new role, Rubino will work with leaders across the system to advance ChristianaCare’s goals of providing high-quality, efficient and timely medical care and for maintaining graduate, postgraduate and continuing education programs in the Department of Surgery. He will have accountability for quality, value-based outcomes, workforce stability, financial vitality and strategic direction of clinical services delivered by the Surgical Services service line in support of ChristianaCare’s mission.

Rubino has held several clinical and academic leadership roles at ChristianaCare, including most recently serving as program director of the general surgery residency, chief of Surgical Services for the Newark campus and division head for Surgical Services.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Legislative Committee for the American College of Surgeons. He is an executive counselor and past president of the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the American College of Health Care Executives.

Rubino earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and holds faculty appointments as assistant clinical professor of surgery there and at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at ChristianaCare.

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Auburn University and a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University.

Rubino reports to Kert Anzilotti, MD, MBA, system chief medical officer for ChristianaCare and interim president of the Medical Group.
