5 Best Deals on Amazon Devices

I was Team Paperback until I tried my first Kindle, and now you can’t pry it out of my fingers. The Paperwhite is the best of the Kindles and our favorite e-reader overall. You’ll have to pay $20 more to get rid of the ads on the lock screen, but they don’t get in the way of your reading if you don’t want to spend more. There are two main versions — the basic Paperwhite and the Signature Edition (8/10, WIRED Recommends) , which has 32GB of storage for 16, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting backlight. There’s also a kids’ version with a case, a one-year Amazon Kids+ subscription, and a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement guarantee. The Paperwhite hasn’t been updated since 2021, and we’re not sure when a new one will be, but mine still works just like it did on day one. We think it’s still a safe bet to buy.

The Paperwhite is best for reading. The Scribe (8/10, WIRED Recommends) with its 10.2-inch screen is also made for writing and drawing. It’s a Kindle at heart, so reading is smooth and there’s no lag when writing. Professional artists will want something better, but using it felt natural. The Scribe is very expensive, though, and the premium version with a pen, with an eraser at one end, is unfortunately no longer available for purchase when we last wrote this. You can’t write directly on the pages of a book, because the Kindle uses sticky notes and is not waterproof.

We generally prefer Roku streaming devices, but if you watch a lot of Amazon Prime content, get the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Of course, anyone can use it, but it clearly promotes Prime content. It has 16 gigabytes of storage, which should be enough for all your streaming apps and games. You can view your security camera feed and ask Alexa to perform various tasks, like ordering a pizza.

Amazon also has its own line of tablets, and in our guide we specifically recommend not buying one unless it’s Prime Day. Fire tablets are mostly crap, but if you’re just planning on watching Amazon content and doing basic work tasks like email, they’re pretty capable and scarily affordable. The Fire HD 10 is our favorite of the bunch, with a 1080p screen and 3 gigs of RAM, so it can handle watching movies and browsing multiple tabs. Like the Kindle, you’ll have to pay an extra $15 to get rid of the ads on the lock screen. There are 32GB and 64GB models available.

Amazon’s Echo Show 8 has been our favorite smart display for Alexa for generations, and the 2023 version is another winner. It slots in perfectly between the tiny 5-inch Show 5 and the mondo-sized Show 10, providing an inviting screen that’s big enough for easy interaction without taking up too much space on your desk. You can check the weather, video chat, add up to three informational widgets, and more, all with Alexa ready to help. It’s a bit pricey at full price, but this sale makes the Show 8 really tempting for anyone looking for a smart assistant that does a little bit of everything. —Ryan Waniata
