PLN to Deliver Green Electricity Through GEAS Service | INSIDER

State-owned power company PT PLN is ready to meet the demand for green electricity from Indonesia’s industrial sector through its Green Energy as A Service (GEAS) programme, which will provide clean electricity from new renewable energy power plants.

PLN support for providing clean electricity to industry was provided under the Green Energy Buyers Dialogue program, which brought together all stakeholders of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), including representatives of the Indonesian Government, representatives of the International Partners Group (IPG), Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), international and domestic private banks and business entities, on 12 July 2024 in Jakarta.

“PLN provides green electricity through the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) as an internationally recognized GEAS product. Each REC certificate proves that the electricity per megawatt-hour (MWh) comes from renewable or non-fossil fuel power plants,” PLN President and CEO Darmawan Prasodjo said in a statement quoted Thursday, July 18, 2024.

In order to ensure the realization of green electricity, PLN continues to increase the capacity of new and renewable power plants in the country. By 2023, the development of PLN renewable power plants has reached 8,786 megawatts (MW). With data on hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 5,777 MW, geothermal power plants with a capacity of 2,519 MW, and the rest comes from solar, wind and biomass energy.

PLN and the government are also finalizing an increase in the renewable energy mix in the National Electricity Master Plan and the latest Electricity Supplement Business Plan. The goal is that the addition of generating capacity in Indonesia in the future will be supported by renewable energy.

“So between now and 2040, an additional 21 gigawatts (GW) of capacity will come from gas-fired power plants, 28 GW from solar and wind, 31 GW from hydro and geothermal, 2.4 GW from new energy,” Darmawan said.
