By now, it’s clear that Dollar Tree can be a fantastic resource for beauty products and cosmetics on a budget. From moisturizers to mascara, some shoppers have even encountered “dupes” of high-end products it costs a fraction of the price. It’s not uncommon to go through the ingredient lists of the foods and drinks you consume, but what about the cosmetics you use every day? In a recent article, TikTok user and shopping influencer Paige Constantine (@paigeconstantino) took the time to scan some of her must-have items from Dollar Tree in the Yuka appwhich highlights all potentially risky components of products to raise consumer awareness. She starts by reviewing the popular Pro Silk Salon Hydrating Conditioner in the hair care section.

“It’s been in huge demand,” she says. “And unfortunately, you should stay away.”

Depending on the application, the products contain two hazardous compounds: methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. The air conditioner only scores 8 points out of a possible 100 on the Yuka app scale.

2 | Spa Soap Creamy Milk and Honey Hand Soap

Like Pro Silk conditioners, this soap also contains “red” level hazardous ingredients methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, but also contains five other low risk “yellow” level compounds. Overall, it gets a “poor” rating, scoring eight out of 100 on the app scale.

“A very good deal, but it is so poorly rated! » said Constantine. “It has so many bad things in it.”

3 | Power Stick Brazilian Mist Body Spray

Citing it as one of his “favorites,” Constantino then scans the Power Stick Brazil Mist Body Spray, a well-known dupe for the Sol de Janeiro 62 Body Spray. Unfortunately, the Yuka app gives the spray a rating of 27 out of 100 – or a “poor” rating – for the inclusion of moderately risky benzyl salicylate. Still, Constantino admits that she can’t resist in this situation.

“Unfortunately, these cans are poorly rated… But unfortunately, I’m taking the risk,” she said, picking up one of the cans from the shelf and putting it in her shopping cart.

“You can find this at almost any Dollar Tree,” Constantino says of the VO5 line. “They look so good, but they’re all very low-rated. In fact, it makes me so sad, like zero out of 100 is SO bad.”

In this case, the products also contain dangerous methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, as well as low-risk cetrimonium chloride and disodium EDTA, among others.

5 | Eve St. Claire Shampoos and Conditioners

VO5 is not the only shampoo and conditioner brand to contain methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. Eve St. Claire hair care products only scored a two out of 100, despite Constantino’s preferences.

“I don’t know why, I just think these are so good… And they’re not.” At all,” she said.

6 | Pro Silk Salon Purple Shampoo, Argan Oil Conditioner and Hydrating Shampoo

Hair care concerns continue with even more products from the Pro Silk Salon line. In this case, Purple Shampoo, Argan Oil Conditioner, and Moisturizing Shampoo score eight, six, and zero out of 100, respectively, in the app’s ratings.

“Not good. Really not good, really, Really not good,” she says of each product.

As you might have guessed, methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone were once again the main offenders.

7 | Luxury Spa Shaving Cream

According to Constantino, looks can be deceiving when it comes to Dollar Store beauty products. This includes Spa Luxury Shaving Cream, which is sold in different scents in seven-ounce pump bottles.

“This packaging makes it look like they would be nice and clean,” she says. “Unfortunately, that’s not the case, so I’d probably stay away from them.”

She points out that the products have a “poor” rating of 12 out of 100 on the Yuka app for the presence of moderately risky compounds like petroleum jelly and C13-14 isoparaffin.

8 | Anti-blemish moisturizer, dark spot treatment and pore-cleansing scrub

Like books, beauty products shouldn’t be judged by their covers. Dollar Tree’s Blemish Control line performs poorly on the Yuka application due to the presence of phenoxyethanol.

“Once again the packaging makes it look like it would be nice and clean, but unfortunately that is not the case at all.”

However, Constantino likes the app’s recommendation of some potential alternative products, including Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant.

9 | B. Pure hyaluronic acid and vitamin C

Constantino then highlights a series of B.Pure dupes that “people love.” However, she is not impressed by her findings.

“Just because the packaging looks like a popular product doesn’t mean it’s good,” she warns, highlighting the product’s “bad” rating on the app.

10 | Dermasil Dry Skin Treatment Lotion

“I generally like Dermasil products,” Constantino admits. “But this one has so many bad ingredients, so stay away.”

Just how is it bad? The seemingly simple product scores zero out of 100, with an ingredient list that includes methylisothiazolinone.
