The Department of Health and Aged Care (DHAC) promoted Emily Harper, Chris Bedford AND Gregory Pugh to the First Deputy Secretary.

Milli Wong left the Department of Education to join the Legal Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs as general counsel. Allyson Martin He also left the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to join the DVA’s Dispute Resolution Team as Principal Legal Officer.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) promoted Scott Fitzpatrick AND Kade Dillon as branch managers for partner effectiveness and market innovation. Ainslie Wood AND Amy’s hand were also appointed as new divisional managers for human resources, culture and wellbeing.

AND THIS Christina Wong was elevated to the role of deputy commissioner for policy, law and advice. Meanwhile, Jacqui Marchment was promoted to the position of Deputy Commissioner for Resource Management.

The Department of Social Services has announced a round of promotions for branch managers, including: Kirsti van der Steen overseeing engagement with revenue management and support services; James Steen oversee financial well-being; Valeria Nadal overseeing support services; Kate Hamilton overseeing national programmes; Danielle Chatillon overseeing payments to caregivers, disabled people and students; Danielle Aeuckens monitoring results and evaluation; Penelope Futcher overseeing employment programs for people with disabilities; Julia McKenzie AND Emma Lenthall overseeing housing and homelessness strategy and data; Suzanne Muir overseeing advocacy and integration programs.

Copyright Agency Announces New Director

The Copyright Agency welcomed Terri Janke as an independent board member. He replaces Jason Eades, who recently stepped down after six years in the role.

Janke is a lawyer specializing in Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural Property Law (ICIP) and an international expert in this field.

She is the creator of the True Tracks ICIP protocols and has written ICIP protocols for various sectors including museums, archives, film, business, and the arts.

Janke has over 20 years of experience as a board member and is an author of both fiction and nonfiction.

Queensland Trade and Investment Board appoints CEO

Queensland Global Trade Agency reappointed Justin McGowan as General Manager for five years.

McGowan joined Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) in January 2023 on a temporary contract basis and has been responsible for Trade Missions to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Denmark, Germany, India and Latin America.

He has previously held senior positions including Commissioner General of Australia at the World Expo in Dubai, CIO of DFAT and Programme Manager for Defence ICT Projects.

McGowan served in the Royal Australian Navy, where he participated in numerous operational missions, including enforcing UN sanctions in the Middle East.

Two people of Native American descent have also been appointed to the TIQ board, replacing outgoing members Kate Hynes and Michele Fleming.

Delvene Cockatoo-Collins is the founder of Minjerribah Art Studio and exports original artwork, pottery and clothing. She is a proud Quandamooka who tells stories about her family’s life on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and responds artistically to historical images and texts.

She is the designer of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games winners’ medals, commemorative medals and the large inflatable Migalu (white humpback whale) that was present at the Opening Ceremony.

Jack Reis is a proud Badulaig resident whose heritage comes from Badu Island in the Torres Strait.

He is Australia’s first Indigenous Entrepreneur of the Year 2022 and Australia’s Indigenous Cybersecurity Chief Executive of the Year 2023.

The son of a Chinchilla cattle farmer and a keen rugby league fan, Reis signed his first NRL contract when he was just 17.

He is the founding member and CEO of cybersecurity company Baidam Solutions.

Industrial decision makers announced

David Chin was admitted to the office of Justice of the Peace of the Industrial Court of New South Wales and to the office of Vice-President of the Industrial Relations Commission.

Chin has been a barrister for over 20 years and is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Sydney.

He is a specialist in occupational health and safety, industrial law, labor law and discrimination. He is the co-author of the book “Modern employment contract”.

In 2019 he was appointed Senior Solicitor and in 1994 he was admitted as an advocate to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

This week, Justice Jane Paingakulam was formally welcomed as Deputy Chairwoman of the Industrial Relations Commission and a judge of the reinstated Labour Court.

Director of the South Australian Legal Services Commission

Anna Maria Lumsden will become the new director of the South Australian Legal Services Commission.

Lumsden has worked in the legal profession for over 30 years, including as Deputy Chief Executive of the Australian Capital Territory Attorney-General’s Department, Director of Criminal Law at Legal Aid NSW and most recently as Chief Executive of Legal Aid NT.

Lumsden will start work in September, allowing for a smooth handover from outgoing director Gabrielle Canny.

Almeida appointed judge of South Africa’s Supreme Court

Aaron Almeida joined the ranks of judges of the District Court of South Australia.

Almeida is a criminal defense attorney with more than 20 years of experience, most recently serving as principal of his own firm, Almeida and Associates.

He also served as Principal Lecturer in Advocacy at the College of Law, Adelaide.

Almeida’s appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Jayne Basheer.

Airservices Australia appoints interim CEO

Former NSW Transport Secretary Rob Sharp has been appointed interim CEO of Airservices Australia.

Former CEO Jason Harfield’s term ended in June, and Acting CEO Pete Curran will return to his role as Deputy CEO.

Catherine King, the federal minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government, said his appointment was for a period of up to 12 months, while a global search for the person who would be substantively responsible for filling the position is underway.

“Mr Sharp’s appointment as interim CEO of Airservices Australia recognises his extensive experience in aviation, business, accounting and engineering,” Mr King said.

“He served for two years as Secretary of the Department of Transport for New South Wales and was previously Chief Executive of Virgin Australia Airlines and Tigerair Australia. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society of London.”

Formula 1 announces the welcome of new members of the Grand Prix Board of Directors

Linda Dessau AC Operations Director and Dr. Gillian Sparkes AM will support the staging of two major motorsport events in Victoria following their appointment to the board of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC).

They will help in the implementation of Formula 1®The Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park and the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island – two annual events that showcase Victoria to the world and make significant contributions to Victoria’s $3.3 billion major events sector.

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Public Events Steve Dimopoulos said Dessau would also serve as deputy chair of the board during her three-year term.

Queensland appoints CS Energy special advisers

With the release of the report into the 2021 Callide incident, where a partial C3 cooling tower collapsed, Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick has appointed a lawyer Tom Fletcher and engineering expert Howard Morrison as special advisers to the Government on how CS Energy can improve its operations.

The CS Energy Review will be led by Queensland Treasury in partnership with the Queensland Treasury Corporation and the Department of Energy and Climate, with a final report due to be submitted to the government in time for the 2025 State Budget.

Trade and Investment Queensland CEO reappointed

Justin McGowan will lead Queensland TIQ for the next five years. Since joining the global business agency in 2023, he has led the organisation in helping exporters and promoting Queensland as a preferred investment destination.

Prior to this role, McGowan served as Australian Commissioner-General at the World Expo in Dubai, facilitating contacts between government representatives, business councils, investors and entrepreneurs.

Treasurer Cameron Dick said McGowan had made a huge impact in his relatively short time in the role.

“It’s exciting to think how many more Queensland businesses he will help win major overseas contracts,” Dick said.

“Justin’s detailed knowledge of Australia’s challenges and opportunities in international trade makes his appointment a huge success for Queensland.

“It enables TIQ to operate globally and supports Queensland businesses in their export expansion, so the Queensland economy, both from an export and investment perspective, is in good hands.
