Damen Shipyards Group has introduced a new engine coupled with a Damen Marine emission reduction system. The Damen D16 has recently achieved EU Stage V certification. The Damen D16 is a marine engine and exhaust gas cleaning system designed and developed in-house by Damen Sustainable Solutions. It aims to reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency, supporting Damen’s goal of becoming the most sustainable marine solutions provider in the world.

A sustainable solution for the marine environment
The Damen D16 is an extension of the current portfolio that the company is introducing to the market. The clean marine engine and marine exhaust gas cleaning system enable Damen customers to remain competitive, flexible and sustainable with this clean and certified solution.

The Damen D16 engine is based on the Volvo Penta D16 IMO II engine. It is characterized by low fuel consumption, reduced SOx, NOx, CO2 and noise emissions, and its universal design provides reliable power.

The engine can also run on HVO (hydrogen-resistant vegetable oil) fuel produced from biomass, which allows for an even further reduction in CO2 emissions.

André de Bie, Sales & Operations Manager Sustainable Solutions at Damen, said: “The team carried out rigorous and extensive engine testing in conjunction with the Damen Marine emissions reduction system. The EU Stage V certification was a welcome achievement and one we at Damen are very proud of. It allows us to offer our customers greater efficiency and flexibility, whatever the future holds, in all waters around the world.”

Valid certification
The EU Stage V engine certification process was completed together with Volvo Penta dealer Haisma in Harlingen, the Netherlands. The certification is valid for the Volvo Penta D16 MH engine family and certified for a wide range of IWA and IWP categories.

With this achievement, Damen can now offer its customers a proven emission reduction system that meets EU Stage V, ULEV and IMO Tier III regulations and is certified for HVO100, EN590, ISO8217 – DMA fuel.

Universal ships for the future
The Damen D16 engine can be used in a variety of vessel types across the marine industry, including tugs, workboats, fast vessels and inland barges, and is available for newbuilds and retrofits. Operating with optimum fuel efficiency, it significantly contributes to reducing a vessel’s CO2 emissions and promoting the development of environmentally friendly shipping.
