Banks, airlines and e-commerce disrupted worldwide

❗ Cyber outage paralyzes banking, trade, travel and more

❗ Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike was apparently targeted

❗ Some office software may be at risk

7:20 am: Isn’t this a cyberattack?

Security firm CrowdStrike initially believed it was a cyberattack, but now says the global technology outage was likely the result of a faulty software update.

According to CNN, CrowdStrike’s CEO called it an “IT issue.” The cause, he says, has been identified and a fix has been deployed.

The statement on the CrowdStrike website reads as follows:

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers affected by a flaw discovered in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not affected. This is not a security incident or cyberattack.

The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed. We are referring customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website.

We also recommend that organizations ensure they communicate with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels.”

Microsoft says the underlying issue for the global outage has been resolved, but customers should expect Microsoft 365 apps and services to continue to be impacted.

6:49 am: Don’t go to Newark airport

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey advises travelers to proceed to Newark Liberty International Airport unless their flight departure has already been confirmed.

WABC-TV reports that only three flights departed from Newark in the past hour.

A cyber outage has a massive impact on business systems, trade and travel worldwide.

Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike is believed to have been the source of the problem that led to a global service outage that affected banks, airlines, companies and other businesses.

Some of the largest companies in the US have been affected, including Microsoft, Amazon, Visa ADT and American Airlines.

There were also reports of some 911 call centers being outaged, but there were no reports of emergency services being interrupted in New Jersey.

We don’t yet know the full scale of the failure.

Who will be affected by a global cyber outage?

Airlines, police agencies, media companies, financial firms, and Microsoft are all reporting outages around the world.

No financial institutions reported problems in the U.S., but problems affected financial institutions in Australia and New Zealand.

In Israel, officials say hospitals and health services are grappling with a computer “failure.”

Delta and United airlines were forced to cancel flights, according to the FAA.

This is only a partial list of effects, new ones are constantly being discovered.

Will my New Jersey office be affected?

Maybe.

It depends on where you work, but Microsoft said all of its 365 apps were affected overnight.

The company says the apps are working again, but discussions on social media suggest there may still be some issues accessing the programs.

Visa has also reported issues. If you accept credit cards, this could impact your business.

Security company ADT was also reportedly attacked.

Will my flight at Newark Liberty International Airport be canceled?

U.S. carriers Delta, United, Frontier and American Airlines have canceled or delayed flights, according to the FAA.

The Flightaware website reports numerous flight cancellations at Newark and other airports around the country.

The problems seem to get worse as the morning progresses.

You are more likely to be affected if you are flying internationally today. International carriers Virgin Australia and Qantas are reporting disruptions.
