Canada’s agriculture ministers fund food sector development

Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) agriculture ministers have announced an investment of C$1.2 million (US$0.87 million) to support the establishment of the Food Code of Practice Adjudication Office.

The short-term funding was announced at the FPT Annual Conference of Agriculture Ministers, held in Whitehorse, Yukon, from July 17 to 19, 2024.

The project aims to improve the fairness, transparency and predictability of the domestic food supply chain, benefiting both the industry and consumers.

The funding announcement comes after major retailers including Loblaw, Walmart and Metro agreed to participate in an industry code of conduct.

The announcement was made as part of broader discussions on strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

The conference also addressed strengthening the food supply chain and the challenges producers face, including operating costs, labor shortages and potential disruptions.

To support producers, ministers stressed the need to improve the agricultural recovery framework and integrate it with business risk management (BRM) programmes, in particular those relating to agricultural sustainability and agricultural insurance.

These programmes play a key role in managing risk and supporting the development of agricultural businesses.

Ministers also addressed topics such as international trade, market diversification and increasing the global competitiveness of the sector.

The emphasis was on supporting ongoing trade negotiations and promoting the benefits of existing free trade agreements, especially the agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Lawrence MacAulay, federal minister of agriculture and agri-food Canada, said: “Thanks to the hard work of our farmers, ranchers and processors, Canada produces the best agricultural products in the world.

“This year’s conference was another great opportunity to highlight the excellent work being done across the country and discuss some of the critical issues we face to help ensure those working in this sector have the tools they need to manage risk, grow their operations and earn a living.”
