Google Pixel 9 series may offer free satellite connectivity

Google may be updating its Pixel devices with satellite connectivity, media outlets report. While the company briefly introduced a new feature from the “Satellite SOS” menu on Pixel phones, it quickly pulled the option, according to a report from 9to5Google. The menu included options for users to communicate their location, key details, and send messages to or from areas outside of network coverage.

In early April, reports emerged that the company was working on an interface that would allow it to find satellites and share their locations with Google Maps.

Since then, there have been other reports that Google’s soon-to-be-launched Pixel 9 series will feature satellite communications.

According to the report, it is still unconfirmed whether Google will extend the feature to all older compatible Pixel devices or just the Pixel 9 series. However, that is unlikely considering the hardware in older Pixel phones does not support satellite connectivity.

The company also announced that satellite connectivity will be made available to users free of charge for several years.

Apple had a similar offer where satellite connectivity was offered for free on the iPhone 14 series, and last year it was extended to the iPhone 15.

Google plans to unveil the Pixel 9 series at an event on August 13.
