With the advent of Apple Intelligence technology, Apple expects all of its upcoming products, including entry-level devices like the next-generation iPhone SE, standard iPad models, and more, to feature the latest-generation chipsets.

According to a report by 9To5Mac, the next-generation iPhone SE model, which is reportedly in the works, will be powered by the A18 chip. The A18 chips are expected to debut in the iPhone 16 series models and will likely feature a new neural processing unit (NPU), called Apple’s Neural Engine, to handle AI features.

The report also claims that Apple is currently working on a HomePod model that will feature a built-in display. Apple will likely put the same A18 chip in it. If true, the HomePod with a display could be the first Apple Home device to receive some Apple Intelligence features.

Similarly, the report claims that Apple could update entry-level iPad models and the next-generation iPad Mini with the latest chip. While Appler Intelligence won’t appear in older-generation devices, it’s expected that all new Apple products will receive AI support in some way.

Why are the latest integrated circuits required?

With Apple making its debut on the AI scene, the company is set to include AI in all of its upcoming devices to take on rivals like Samsung, Google, and Microsoft. However, Apple’s new AI features, which it calls Apple Intelligence, require specific hardware to work properly.

During a talk show at Apple’s annual developer conference, Apple software engineering chief Craig Federighi explained the company’s decision to limit Apple Intelligence to the iPhone 15 Pro models in the current iPhone lineup. He said that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are powered by the A17 Pro chip, which includes a 16-core Neural Engine. This section of the processor is responsible for handling AI workloads. Compared to the Neural Engine in the A16 Bionic chip that powers the regular iPhone 15 models, the A17 Pro offers more processing power.
