‘Veep’ Producer Attacks ‘Assholes’ Who Compare Kamala Harris to Hapless Vice President on Show

The executive producer of a political sitcom about a vice president attacked several “fools” among viewers who unfavorably compared the main character to Vice President Harris.

Veep aired on HBO from 2012 to 2019 and starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the comically inept fictional Vice President Selina Meyer. In recent years, comparisons of the titular character to Harris have made headlines from critics criticizing the vice president for his so-called “word salads.”

Veep showrunner David Mandel spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the increase in the show’s popularity following Harris’s Democratic nomination.

“So I think it’s a delight that she’s a fan. I love anything positive,” he said. “But it drives me crazy when people try to use ‘Veep’ to belittle her. I hate that.”

“But there are two types of people who are making ‘Veep’ memes right now: There are people who are genuinely happy about the moment where Selina tells her employees she’s running for president; there’s a joy in that that’s funny and nice and celebratory,” he added. “And then there are idiots who are using it differently. Surprise, surprise, Kamala is a woman of color, and it seems like these people are using that as an easy way to insult her. So I don’t like that part.”

KAMALA HARRIS HIT BY IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES OVER BORDER CRISIS, ‘MISLEADING’ PEOPLE ABOUT BIDEN

While “Veep” is being watched by two different audiences as Harris’ popularity has surged, Mandel, who hosted the show from 2016 until its finale in 2019, says there’s nothing that will heal the divide in America between them anytime soon, and he has no desire for the newsroom to fix it on its own.

“I’m not sure we’re going to heal the great divide that’s going on in this country. If I meet a Trump supporter, I can’t agree to disagree. And the other side of the coin is more than mutual. I’m not sure she or anyone else is going to heal the great divide. But I’m just excited about the energy right now. It really does feel like a new generation in a new, wonderful way. I like her; I like the other gentleman, Doug. And there’s nothing funnier than watching Trump lose control and complain about the money he spent on the first debate.”

“If I were Team Kamala Harris, I would challenge him to four debates,” Mandel said. “She’s raised so much money in the last few days that she should agree to pay for it. And say, ‘Don’t worry, Donald, just come and answer our questions about the judges that you appointed who overturned Roe v. Wade — tell us what you really think about a woman’s choice and her body.’”
