Sam Kerr sends Olympic message to Matildas ahead of opening match against Germany

  • Kerr, 30, sidelines with knee injury

Sam Kerr has expressed her support for the Matildas, with the Australian star watching from afar as Tony Gustavsson’s team begin their preparations for the Olympics on Thursday.

Kerr, 30, was unable to feature for her country in Paris due to a long-term knee injury that has sidelined her since early January.

That didn’t stop her from cheering on her teammates as they took to the pitch for a tough opening match against world No. 4-ranked Germany in Marseille.

Kerr posted a photo of her TV screen with the caption: “Come on girls” as the Matildas sang the national anthem before kick-off.

However, the start of the Games was disastrous for Tony Gustavsson’s team and they were already losing in the first half, after Marina Hegering beat Mackenzie Arnold with a powerful header and the ball hit the net.

Steph Catley, who wore the captain’s armband in Kerr’s absence, caused concern among Matildas fans after she suffered a head injury but returned to the pitch after receiving medical treatment.
