London, July 27 (PTI) Dr Neeraj Patil, a leading ethnic minority leader and former mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth, has been appointed a member of the National Executive Committee, the highest decision-making body of the UK’s ruling Labour Party.

Patil’s appointment to the National Executive Committee (NEC) was confirmed in a letter sent last week by Labour Party General Secretary David Evans.

The NEC, which governs the Labour Party, setting the overall strategic direction and policy development, is made up of 39 members including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, trade union representatives, MPs and party members.

Born in Kalburgi, Karnataka, Patil did his primary schooling in India and then completed postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, earning his FRCS and MRCS in Accident and Emergency (A&E).

Consultant Emergency Physician with 28 years’ experience in the National Health Service (NHS) and an active member of the Labour Party for 20 years.

He was twice elected to the Labour Party’s National Political Forum.

Dr Patil served on Lambeth Council for eight years and was instrumental in installing the Basaveshwara statue opposite the UK Parliament in 2015, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
