Harris Asks TikTok Star to Send Message to Trump

VPresident Kamala Harris — the current presumptive Democratic presidential nominee after Joe Biden dropped out of the race — joined the TikTok app on July 25 and has already made an impression.

Harris has uploaded four videos so far, and at the time of posting, he has amassed 7 million likes and 2.7 million followers. The latest of those videos features Harris with Lance Bass of boy band NSYNC.

Bass looks into the camera and says, “Hey Kamala. What are we going to tell Donald Trump in November?” Then he cuts to Harris, standing next to him. “Bye, bye, bye,” he says, then laughs. The music starts: “Bye Bye Bye,” a song NSYNC released in 2000.

The caption under the post quotes another fragment of the song: “Ain’t no lie.”

Harris, 59, joins Bass, 45, in drag queen reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race Starsurging Americans to vote. The performance aired in the U.S. on Friday but was recorded weeks before President Biden withdrew his re-election bid. One of Harris’ other TikTok videos shows her visit to the show.

“Hi everyone. This is Kamala Harris,” she said on the show. “Every day we witness attacks on our rights and freedoms, including the right of everyone to be who they are, to love who they love, openly and proudly.”

The film stars Bass, Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and choreographer Jamal Sims, and actors Cheyenne Jackson and Leslie Jones.

It’s just the latest move in Harris’ campaign strategy to actively reach out to younger voters, as well as the memes that have surrounded Harris since Biden endorsed her. Harris references the memes in her first video, where she says, “I heard you were on the For You Page recently, so I thought I’d put myself out there.”

The memes include references to Charli XCX’s album Brother — inspired by the British pop star’s “kamala IS brother” tweet — as well as references to her awkward moments as a senator and vice president.
