Many EV owners are unhappy with their purchase: survey

New Delhi: Electric vehicles may have caught people’s attention over the past few years, but a large number of people driving such vehicles do not seem to be happy with their ownership. A recent survey found that 51% Electric vehicle owners want to go back to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles due to problems with finding available and working ones charging stations to perform their regular activities maintenance and their poor resale valueThe survey was conducted among 500 electric car owners in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
According to the study, finding an accessible, safe and functional charging station was a major concern for 88% of EV owners. “Even with over 20,000 EV charging stations in India, EV owners found the visibility of these stations to be extremely unclear,” the report said, adding that EV owners preferred to take short intercity drives, limited to less than 50 km. Maintenance costs also emerged as a major concern for EV owners, with 73% of respondents saying that their EVs were like a ‘black box’ that they could not decipher. “Their local mechanics were also unable to resolve minor issues on the spot. Respondents also highlighted the fact that they were unable to get a clear picture of repair costs as they could not get a second opinion from many repair shops,” the report mentioned.
Around 33% of respondents said that the offer to sell their EV was significantly lower than the perceived value. “Keeping this in mind, the resale value of EVs in India is expected to increase as the current EV ecosystem matures. While ICE cars can be quickly valued based on their age and mileage, there are no common tests to determine the quality of the battery, which accounts for 30% of the value of an EV,” the report said.
The study report further found that EV owners were dissatisfied with the “perceived daily inconveniences” of owning an EV, with 51% saying they would prefer to return to owning a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. The study was conducted by Park+, a car app that provides parking solutions, Fastag management, insurance, automated vehicle access control systems and information on EV charging stations.
